宇佐

To the north of Beppu lies the shrine city of Usa. The bright-orange shrine building are decorated with carvings; the style of the buildings is of the Heian era (794-1192) but the shrine was founded earlier (725). The hill on which the shrine is build is an old burial mound. (one paragraph omitted) A story, probably dubious, reported that interest in Usa picked up in the immediate post-war occupation period because of companies who wanted to be able to mark their manufactures "MADE IN USA." 宇佐
別府の北には、神社の街・宇佐がある。宇佐神宮の朱色に塗られた建物には彫刻がほどこされている。様式は平安時代（794年〜1192年）のものだが、造宮はもっと昔（725年）のことだ。神社が建つ丘は、陵墓になっている。 （中略） 眉唾ものなのだが、終戦後の占領期初めに宇佐が注目を集めたことがあると言われている。自社製品に「メイド・イン・ＵＳＡ」というマークを入れたいと思った企業がかなりあったかららしい。 （訳：ピンキィ君の夫） |
日本版「神々の指紋」と言われている（言っているのは私だけか）星野之宣「ヤマタイカ」で有名な宇佐神宮です。まぁ、日本の歴史に色々絡んでいる神社ではありますが、戦後にまで絡んでいたとは．．．。ここに祭られている神々がこれを聞いたらお怒りになるだろうな。私にとっての宇佐神宮の第一印象は、お堀の池の汚さ、橋のボロさ、駅からの遠さでした。でも、私も宇佐に着いて最初にしたことは、駅のホームで「ＵＳＡ」の看板と並んでの記念撮影だったりするので、あまり人の事は強く言えない。
